The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program prepares the student to perform a variety of therapeutic procedures and skilled training to aid the physical therapist in providing physical therapy to patients. A PTA, under the direction and supervision of a physical therapist, follows the plan of care established by the physical therapist. The PTA may document the patient’s treatment and the patient’s response to treatment.

The increasing need for Physical Therapist Assistants continues to grow. According to the Department of Labor, employment of PTAs is expected to grow faster than average through the year 2014. The need for services of PTAs is due to the growing elderly population, the retirement of “baby boomers” and the increasing need for health and wellness programs under skilled expertise. This aging population has many chronic diseases, episodes of acute illness as well as preventative health needs that the PT/PTA team is well trained to treat.

Upon successful completion of the PTA program and providing all requirements are met, the graduate will receive an Associate of Applied Science Degree (A.A.S.) and will be eligible to sit for state licensure examination for Physical Therapist Assistants.

Professional Skills Institute takes pride in its comprehensive preparation of its graduates and welcomes those prospective students who are interested in learning more about this challenging and rewarding profession.

The Physical Therapist Assistant program is presented over a period of 24 months or 96 weeks. This period is divided into eight (8) 12-week quarters consisting of 300 hours in general education, 1006 clock hours in PTA/BIO technical courses and 656 clock hours in clinical practica, totaling 1964 clock hours for the PTA program. The clinical practica hours represent 33 percent of the entire clock hours. The program starts in April and October of each year.
