Medical Insurance Specialists are experts in billing and coding. Their job is a crucial link between patients and health insurance companies. Attention to detail, accuracy and good organizational skills are important qualities that a medical insurance specialist must possess.
Every time a patient receives healthcare, a code to each diagnosis and procedure is properly assigned. Classification manuals and computer software are utilized to aid in this task. The medical insurance specialist program prepares students in the proper use of ICD-9-CM and CPT insurance coding. Students learn to correctly prepare insurance forms and enter patient charges, payments and adjustments. Basic accounting is also taught within the program.
Upon completion of the medical insurance specialist program, students will receive a diploma and be eligible to work in medical offices, clinics and hospital billing departments. This program is the right choice for those students interested in working in the medical field in a “behind the scenes” capacity.
The Medical Insurance Specialist (MIS) program is presented over a period of 48 weeks. This period is divided into four (4) 12-week quarters. A total of 700 hours are spent in the classroom and lab. Externship consists of 160 hours served in a medical facility. The total clock hours the student will receive for this program will be 860 hours.
