The medical office is a fast paced environment that requires the assistance of strong medical personnel. Medical Assistants (MA) are the key players in helping to manage the office. Their multitasking abilities enable them to meet the demands of both physicians and patients alike. In fact, their skills are so vital that the Department of Labor lists medical assisting as one of the fastest growing occupations.

Medical assistants perform a variety of clerical and clinical skills. Clinical skills include taking medical histories and recording vital signs, preparing patients for examination and assisting the physician during the examination. They also collect and prepare laboratory specimens or perform basic laboratory tests on the premises. Clerical skills may involve updating and filing patients’ medical records, handling correspondence, scheduling appointments and arranging for hospital admission and laboratory services. In addition, MAs may also have to purchase and maintain supplies and equipment.

The medical assisting program is offered in the form of a diploma and an Associate Degree of Applied Science (A.A.S.). One of the unique benefits of this program is the inclusion of phlebotomy training. After graduation, students will be eligible to take the exam to become a Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT). Students will also qualify to take the registry exams to become a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) and a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA). Medical assisting is a perfect way to begin a career in the medical field.

The Medical Office Assistant (MA) program is presented over a period of 48 weeks. This period is divided into four (4) 12-week quarters. A total of 850 clock hours are spent in the classroom and lab. Externship consists of 160 hours served in a medical facility. The total clock hours the student will receive for this program will be 1010.
